Ashamed of your real eating habits?

Food falling on a person. Cartoon.

Have you ever worried about someone uncovering the real extent of your eating habits? I don’t mean on the days when you’re eating sensibly or while in public, but on those private indulgent days where pizza, ice cream, and all the yummy treats become your best friends? This apprehension crossed my mind today when I was working on a file belonging to someone employed at my bank. An uninvited thought appeared, “What if they look up my name in the system and see my many Uber eats takeouts and McDonald’s orders?”

It’s a curious fear, given that I don’t deny or hide the reasons for my weight issues (spoiler alert: I have a considerable appetite, although I’m currently on a weight loss journey with an attempt to control it). But what I’m not ready for is this personal struggle leaking into my professional life, as though my indulgence in food might somehow signal an inability to perform my job. Sounds absurd, doesn’t it?

Maybe this worry is a mirror, reflecting that yes, I do need to alter my eating habits. Or perhaps it’s exposing an internalized stigma I’ve been carrying and need to confront. Either way, it’s certainly given me food for thought.
